Cricket's three formats and popular tournaments

Cricket is a sport where the nature of betting differs across each format. A T20 match finishes in just a few hours, so the situation changes from moment to moment — a single over can turn the betting picture around. In ODIs, the 50-over framework calls for both strategy and patience; understanding a team's mid-match momentum is important here.

Test matches run over five days, so wickets, pitch conditions and the effect of weather carry much more weight on bets. The depth of available markets is also greatest in Tests.

T20 ODI Test BPL IPL T20 World Cup ICC Champions Trophy

BPL is the most popular domestic tournament for fans in Bangladesh — the contest at the grounds in Dhaka and Chattogram has its own special atmosphere. IPL is India's top T20 league but is hugely popular in Bangladesh too. On the international stage, the Bangladesh Tigers' matches in the ICC T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy spark discussion across the whole country.

Football and other sports — how they differ from cricket

At 99 bat you can find markets for football and several other sports as well. In football, match-winner, handicap and number-of-goals markets are very common. The key difference from cricket is that football has a draw option and matches last 90 minutes, so the market structure is different.

Badminton betting has its own character — each game and set creates a separate market, whereas in cricket a single over can change the picture. The badminton betting page covers the markets and strategies for that sport in detail.

7 popular cricket markets with brief examples

Each market has its own appeal. The cards below give a general idea of how each market works.

Match Winner

The simplest market — pick which of the two teams will win the match. There is no draw in T20 or ODI, so there are only two options.

Cricket · Main market

Toss winner

You can bet on the outcome of the toss before the match begins. In cricket, many bettors choose the toss market with pitch conditions and weather in mind.

Toss · Pre-match

Top run scorer

The main question in this market is which batter will score the most runs — for a team or across the whole match. Decisions are made by checking batting form and the nature of the pitch.

Batter · Special market

Total runs over/under

The betting site sets a specific run total. Example: "Will total runs be over 160?" — you choose yes or no.

Runs · Total

Top wicket taker

Bet on which bowler will take the most wickets in the match. Knowing whether the pitch favours pace bowlers or spinners makes it easier to analyse this market.

Bowler · Special market

First over runs

Will runs in the first over be above or below a set number. In T20 this market is particularly engaging because teams are aggressive from the very start.

Over · Special

How to read odds — three formats

Cricket betting odds are shown in three formats — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same information in different ways.

Example 1: Team A to win, stake ৳500. Decimal 2.50 means fractional 3/2 or American +150. If this bet wins, the total return is ৳1,250 (৳750 profit + ৳500 original stake); if it loses, ৳500 is gone.

Example 2: Team B to win (the favourite), stake ৳500. Decimal 1.50 means fractional 1/2 or American -200. American minus odds show how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit. If this bet wins, the return is ৳750 (৳250 profit).

Decimal format is the simplest — it shows only the total return. Multiply the stake by the odds and you get the total return.

Team A, stake ৳500 — same odds in three formats

Decimal 2.50
Fractional 3/2
American +150
Total return if won ৳1,250
Loss if lost ৳500

Live betting — odds change with every wicket and over

In-play or live betting means placing bets while the match is in progress. In cricket this is especially useful because a maiden over or two wickets in quick succession can shift the odds dramatically.

Say a team has lost 3 wickets in 8 overs in the first innings — in that situation both the match-winner market odds and the expected total runs will change. In live betting you can make decisions based on the score, overs and current partnership.

In T20, the two most important pieces of information in the final 5 overs are the run rate and wickets in hand. In Tests, the fifth-day pitch and the number of wickets remaining have a big influence on live markets.

On the 99 bat Bet platform you can view live scores and odds updates together, which helps with in-play decisions.

Some practical tips for cricket betting

Cricket betting is for entertainment — bet with a plan and stay within your means.

  • Set your budget first: Before each session, decide the maximum amount you will stake and stick to that limit. Do not try to recover losses immediately after a losing bet.
  • Choose markets based on the format: In T20, match-winner or total runs markets are a straightforward starting point. In Tests, the top wicket taker market is more interesting.
  • Check the pitch report: On a spin-friendly pitch it is better not to bet on pace bowlers. On a grassy pitch, fast bowlers tend to dominate.
  • Be careful with multi bets: Adding more selections does increase the return, but if even one is wrong you lose everything. Fewer selections mean lower risk.
  • Start slowly with live betting: Odds move quickly in-play. For the first few matches, just watch and try to understand how the odds change.
  • Play responsibly: Betting is a form of entertainment. Keep a clear head and know your limits. Read the responsible gaming guidelines for more information.

Cricket betting FAQ

The three formats are completely different. T20 matches finish quickly, so there is less time to decide — match-winner or total runs markets are more common. In ODIs, the five batting powerplays and mid-match momentum matter. In Tests, you need to analyse five days of changing conditions — pitch behaviour, weather and a team's batting depth all feed into your decisions.

The most important information in in-play betting is the current score, wickets fallen, run rate and overs remaining. In T20, the pressure to score quickly in the last five overs affects the total runs market. When a key wicket falls — such as an opener or the main mid-order batter — the match-winner market odds shift immediately.

At 99 bat you can add multiple selections to a multi bet. Keep in mind that the more selections you add, the higher the risk — if just one selection is wrong, the entire bet is lost. Example with three selections: odds 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.60 = 3.36, meaning a ৳100 bet returns ৳336. It is better to start with fewer selections.

If a match is cancelled or cut short due to weather, bets are usually settled according to the specific rules for that market. In most cases, if the required number of overs is not completed, the bet is voided and the stake is returned. See the Terms and Conditions page for the exact rules.

Decimal odds are the most familiar and easiest to understand for bettors in Bangladesh. Just multiply the stake by the odds to get the total return. Example: ৳500 × 2.50 = ৳1,250 total return (৳750 profit). With American odds, a minus number indicates the favourite and a plus number indicates the underdog — that takes a little time to get used to.
